Rauwolfia for Hypertension

High blood pressure has unfortunately become widespread, as it often develops gradually and goes unnoticed for a long time. Over time, however, hypertension can become dangerous because it puts strain on the heart and other vital organs. Fortunately, there are effective treatment options.

When Is Blood Pressure Considered High?

Medical professionals define high blood pressure as consistent readings of 140/90 mmHg or higher. Optimal blood pressure is considered to be below 120/80 mmHg.

Why Is Hypertension Dangerous?

As the name implies, hypertension means the pressure in the blood vessels is too high. In the early stages, it often causes no noticeable symptoms, which is why it can be so dangerous. Over time, the increased pressure can damage the vessels and accelerate vascular aging. This means arteries may calcify prematurely (arteriosclerosis), increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

What Can Be Done About High Blood Pressure?

The risk of cardiovascular disease can be reduced through a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet and regular physical activity. For those who are overweight, achieving a healthy weight can help significantly. Additionally, there are many medications available to help lower blood pressure.

Rauwolfia for High Blood Pressure

Rauwolfia, also known as Indian snakeroot, is a plant native to Asia and belongs to the dogbane family. The name is fitting—because in the wrong dosage, Rauwolfia can be toxic! For this reason, it should only be taken under medical supervision. As an alternative remedy, the root of the plant is used in phytotherapy and Ayurvedic medicine.

Because Rauwolfia contains the active compound reserpine, it may be effective in lowering high blood pressure.
