Stress Makes You Sick: Mental Hygiene and the Immune System Part 2

You’ve probably heard the saying: “It’s giving me a stomachache.” This phrase has some truth to it, as stomach ulcers are a common effect of prolonged chronic stress. When our body is under constant stress, it can lead to various symptoms. Mental health affects the immune system — and vice versa. Here are some steps you can take to support your mental well-being.

Understand and Acknowledge

First, allow yourself to recognize that you are under significant psychological stress. Sometimes we’re so overwhelmed that we no longer realize how much we’re actually doing. Especially when it comes to traumatic experiences, acknowledging the situation is the first step toward healing. Taking a step back and viewing your situation from an outside perspective can open the door to change.

Understand the Background

It helps to understand how your current burden has developed. Gaining insight into background factors and dynamics can switch on important lights for us. For example, if we understand how attachment issues can develop in childhood, it may become easier to tackle and resolve current relationship problems. Working with a psychotherapist can support this process.

Appreciation

Showing yourself kindness and appreciation is a wonderful step on the path to healing. You can be proud of everything you've managed to accomplish so far. Every reaction you’ve had in tough situations has taught you valuable survival strategies.

Heal Inner Parts

These survival strategies often drain our energy and may no longer be helpful — sometimes even disruptive. Working with your inner parts can support healing. Psychotherapy, systemic therapy, trauma therapy, and other forms of bodywork can help promote emotional recovery. Coaching or meaningful conversations with trusted friends can also help you recharge.

Sharpen Your Self-Awareness

Try to listen more closely to yourself, your body, and your needs. Your body usually gives you signals. Take the time to hear what it’s trying to tell you. To do this, you need time, space — and most importantly — silence. Mindfulness training can help shift your focus.

Gratitude

Reflect on everything you’ve already achieved and be grateful for it. Record positive moments or experiences — maybe even keep a gratitude journal. Every evening, write down 3 or more things you were thankful for that day. By focusing your thoughts on positive experiences, you’ll feel more calm and centered.

Strengthen Your Immune System

Mental hygiene also means recognizing that not only does emotional strain affect the body, but the body affects the mind, too. From a medical perspective, humans must always be viewed as a whole. That’s why, for example, immunotherapies can also strengthen you — because a strong immune system can cope with stress more easily.
So it is always possible to work from both sides. Supporting your psyche strengthens the immune system — and strengthening the immune system supports your mental health.

Schleicher & Brückl Practice is happy to help you restore your natural sense of health. With individual therapy, immune modulation, mental hygiene, and other supportive measures, we can help guide you out of the low.
