Stress Makes You Sick: Mental Hygiene and the Immune System Part 1

Many people feel stressed: rushing from one appointment to the next, excessive workload, constantly feeling overwhelmed, combined with perhaps a negative environment — and mental health suffers. But this psychological stress doesn’t just affect our mood; it also impacts the immune system, because the immune system and psyche influence each other! This means that ongoing stress and inner conflict can also contribute to physical illness.

What Happens in the Body Under High Psychological Stress?

During extreme psychological stress — for example, due to trauma or resulting attachment disorders or fear of loss — the nervous system becomes overstimulated, leading to increased release of various mediators and stress hormones. The dysregulated autonomic nervous system and constant stimulation from these substances disrupt immune regulation. This can lead to various effects. For instance, the stress hormone cortisol can increase the number of suppressor cells (a special form of T cells), which in turn slows down the immune response. Fundamental dysregulation may also lead to autoimmune diseases, allergies, or chronic illnesses. Studies now show that trauma and resulting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can even cause DNA damage.

Additional Stressors That Can Affect the Immune System:

  • Childhood trauma
  • Loss experiences
  • Chronic stress situations
  • Toxic relationships
  • Experiences of violence
  • Accidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Hospitalization
  • Difficult attachment relationships
  • Bullying
  • Work overload
  • Depressed individuals in your close environment

Mental health is therefore closely linked to physical well-being. In the next article, we’ll explain which steps can help you improve your mental health — and with it, your immune system.
